LEGACY. COMMITMENT. COMMUNITY. IMPACT
The mission of Chicago Youth Centers (CYC) is to empower children and teens to recognize and experience their possibility and promise.
For more than 2,300 children annually, Chicago Youth Centers (CYC) provides a pathway out of poverty and violence. Through seven Centers located throughout Chicago, and Camp Rosenthal in Michigan, we surround children ages 3-18 with the social capital needed to succeed and persist in school, in their daily lives, and ultimately in the workforce: innovative and creative spaces to learn; engaged families and mentors; and programs designed to expand children’s abilities to reason, create, communicate, and collaborate. We empower youth to overcome significant gaps – academic, aspirational, employable, and socialeconomic – caused by lack of resources and exposure to violence.
We provide year-round holistic education that integrates academic, social, emotional, and physical development to support and challenge the whole child across all age groups.
We develop and deliver innovative curriculum modeled after the national movement The Partnership for 21st Century Learning, which fuses academics with non-cognitive skills and project-based learning so children are equipped to succeed in school and prepared to become effective community leaders and employees.
We engage children early (starting at age 3) to put them on a path to success and keep them on track, providing services when they are most vulnerable: after school and during the summer.
We offer family engagement programs to help families guide their children during critical transitions: entering kindergarten, beginning high school, and preparing for college or a career. We are one of a select few agencies to partner with Get in Chicago and implement the BProud curriculum, which teaches families to cultivate anti-violent behaviors within their children and communities.
We build strong partnerships within communities to create a village of committed community leaders, schools, volunteers, and peer organizations dedicated to our children’s success.
Through the commitment of our Board of Directors, staff, and supporters, our work produces transformative outcomes.
We empower children to:
- Increase knowledge of options and ability to choose a path out of poverty
- Build a network of role-models and mentors to provide examples of success
- Increase attendance, grades, performance, and engagement in school
- Build resilience and persistence throughout their development
- Increase interest in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) fields and begin to build the skills employers value
- Develop a lifestyle focused on health and wellness
